This course provides a fantastic opportunity to expand your knowledge on an interesting mix of scientific topics. During the programme, you will have the opportunity to explore the wonders of the human body, discover the world of viruses and bacteria and develop practical skills.

We provide a diverse mix of biology, chemistry and physics units including genetics and genetic engineering, biomedical science techniques and forensic science all encompassed in one course. We place great emphasis on developing practical skills, dedicating time and resources to developing lab based skills and practical analysis.  During the first year of the programme you will study the following 10 units:

  • Fundamentals of Science

  • Working in the Science industry

  • Scientific Investigation

  • Practical Science Techniques

  • Perceptions of Science

  • Mathematical tools for Science

  • Statistics for Science

  • Physiology of Human Body Systems

  • Biochemistry and Biochemical Techniques

  • Chemistry for Biology Technicians

Following on from that, learners progress to the second year of the programme and study a further 9 units.  These units include:

  • Physiology of Human Reproductiona and Regulation

  • Microbiological Techniques

  • Genetics and Genetic Engineering

  • Practical Chemical Analysis

  • Biomedical Science Techniques

  • Industrial Chemical Reactions

  • Industrial applications of Organic Chemistry

  • Forensic Evidence collection and Analysis

  • Clinical Psychology

We have spent a great deal of resources developing and modernising our laboratory and equipment with all new biochemistry and forensic equipment so you can learn the techniques exactly as they are carried out in industry. During the programme you will develop your knowledge and practical skills in a diverse range of scientific areas. This programme is perfect for anyone wishing to progress to higher education to study a degree in a scientific area or for anyone who wishes to transition directly into employment at entry level in the science industry.

Entry Requirements top

5 GCSEs (or Equivalent) Grade A-C (9-4) including Science, Maths and English

Assessment top

The majority of the units are assignment based, taking the form of essays, reports, presentations and posters. These are completed throughout the year as units are being taught. 

Professional Opportunities top

The course is ideal for anyone that wishes to pursue a career in science or related areas including biology, chemistry, biomedical science, pharmacy, radiography, forensic science and a lot more. This qualification is an ideal route into Higher education, with many of our leavers progressing to study at Degree level.

This qualification is also suitable for progression straight into work in scientific industries.

We have had students’ progress into degrees in various subjects including; biochemistry and biotechnology, chemical engineering, pharmacology, marine biology, forensic science, radiology, sports science, paramedic studies and nursing and midwifery, among others.

This qualification can provide the basis for routes into areas other than science. We have had learners progress into a variety of areas including law, history, accounting and games design due to the transferrable skills gained over the duration of the course.
