Whether you choose English, Maths or both, you can fast track your way towards a GCSE qualification in these core subjects and achieve the gold standard in English and maths by next Summer!

Following face-to-face contact time with a subject specialist, you will have regular opportunities to sit the formative assessments and get individualised feedback until your Summer exams. You can expect tailored support in an inclusive environment to develop your core skills.

Resources will also be available on a virtual learning environment which you will be able to access from home for learning opportunities to suit your lifestyle.

 

English

English GCSE is awarded by AQA and will be delivered with a range of resources and with plenty of opportunities to sit formative assessments and practice papers in preparation for the Summer exams.

This course will develop your reading, writing and speaking and listening skills and is 100% examination based sat across 2 separate papers.

Maths

Maths GCSE is awarded by WJEC Eduqas and will be delivered with a range of resources and with plenty of opportunities to sit formative assessments and practice papers in preparation for the Summer exams.

This course will develop your numeracy skills in topics such as number, shape, measure and handling data. You will be working on both calculator and non-calculator numeracy skills. You will have tailored programme that will be tracked to show your progress. This is 100% examination based and sat across 2 separate papers.

Adult Functional Skills 

Our Functional Skills qualifications are intended for anyone wishing to develop their maths and English. This qualification leads to further development in flexible functional skills in English and Maths, where you will learn valuable skills for work and life which are needed now more than ever.

Entry Requirements top

Our GCSE programmes are for those learners who have achieved a Level 1 previously or have a Grade 3/D. We will also consider adults without these achievements if they attain a good score in the BKSB Initial Assessments upon enrolment. 

Assessment top

You will be informally assessed at enrolment to determine your suitability for the course.

Our assessments with AQA for English have been designed to inspire and motivate students, providing appropriate stretch and challenge whilst ensuring, as far as possible, that the assessment and texts are accessible to the full range of students.

 

The specification will enable students of all abilities to develop the skills they need to read, understand and analyse a wide range of different texts covering the 19th, 20th and 21st century time periods as well as to write clearly, coherently and accurately using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures.

All subject content for GCSE Maths with WJEC can be assessed on either Component 1 (Non-calculator Mathematics) or Component 2 (Calculator allowed Mathematics). The subject content for both tiers is below:

Professional Opportunities top

Achieving this qualification leads to having the gold standard in English and maths where you will be able to access Higher Education courses and most roles to start and progress through your career.

Further Information top

This is a full academic programme with an examination in June where you will sit 2 papers for each of the subjects.

Night classes at South Tyneside College are held on: 

  • Mondays, 6pm - 9pm for English 
  • Wednesdays, 6pm - 9pm for Maths 

Functional skills will run over 17 weeks from your start date, and this is a roll on roll off programme. 

Day classes at South Tyneside College are held on: 

  • Mondays, 1pm - 2.30pm for English 
  • Wednesdays, 1pm - 2.30pm for Maths 

*If you would like to fast-track through the programme, you can access the online resources and work through with your tutor to sit an early exam. 

GCSE classes will run for the full year, September to June.

 

SUMMER GCSE EXAM DATES - 2023 

  • English (AQA) Paper 1 Exams Monday 5th June 2023 9am
  • English (AQA) Paper 2 Exams Wednesday 7th June 2023 9am 
  • Maths (WJEC EDUQAS) Paper 1 Friday 19th May 2023 9am (Non-Calculator Paper) 
  • Maths (WJEC EDUQAS) Paper 2 Wednesday 7th June 2023 9am (Calculator Paper) 

All learners to arrive at college reception at least 30 mins before their exams to sign in and go to their exam room.

Please note: Exams will start promptly at 9am and please don't forget to bring your student ID and a black pen. Everything else is provided. 

Learners are instructed to check notice boards and speak to their E&M tutors for further information.
