WJEC Diploma in Criminology Level 3
OVERVIEW
The level 3 Diploma in Criminology is an exciting program that is aimed at school leavers. Learners will complete the diploma in one year and then progress onto the forensic science course for year 2. Alongside the main programme of study, learners will also complete a mentoring qualification which will enhance learner’s skills in a work based setting. In addition, an extended project will also be completed where learners will be able to study an area of personal interest.
Within the diploma in criminology learners will study four units:
- Unit 1: Changing Awareness of Crime – this will demonstrate understanding of the different types of crime, influences on perceptions of crime and why some crimes are unreported.
- Unit 2: Criminological Theories – this unit will allow learners to gain an understanding of why people commit crime, drawing on the criminological, sociological and psychological perspectives.
- Unit 3: Crime Scene to Courtroom – this unit will provide an understanding of the criminal justice system from the moment a crime has been identified to the verdict. Learners will examine a range of real life case studies and evaluate the effectiveness of personnel involved.
- Unit 4: Crime and Punishment – learners will apply their understanding of the awareness of criminality, criminological theories and the process of bringing an accused to court. Learners will also develop their knowledge of the agencies that make up our CJS.
Trips and visits, as well as guest speakers will be used in the teaching of these modules to support understanding of the subject area.

As part of the course, you will also take part in an external work placement to help you develop your confidence and skills to stand out from the crowd.
Five GCSEs at Grade A-C (9-4), including maths and English.
GCSE D (3) or above in science.
There are two externally set exams and two externally set assignments for criminology.
The extended project is achieved through the production of a portfolio.
Successful learners can apply to study psychology or continue studying on the forensic science and criminal Investigation programme here at South Tyneside College. Full advice and guidance on progression routes and opportunities will be offered throughout the programme.
Having a degree in Criminology opens a wide range of jobs with fantastic salaries:
Forensic Psychologist -Fully-qualified, registered psychologists within HMPS earn between £38,148 and £43,870 (band 7), while senior registered psychologists can earn £42,626 and £51,154 (band 8).
Fancy a career within the police? Experienced detective staff in England, Wales and Northern Ireland earn between £43,965 and £46,277 as a sergeant, £52,698 and £57,162 as an inspector, £58,332 and £60,732 as a chief inspector, £70,173 to £82,881 as a superintendent and £86,970 to £91,749 as a chief superintendent.
Scene of Crime Officer experienced crime scene investigators or crime scene managers can earn between £24,000 and £35,000, plus allowances.
Fancy a career in the Judiciary service? Judicial pay ranges from around £90,000 to £270,000 per year, depending on their seniority.
Learners benefit from a wide range of enrichment activities including visits from guest speakers within the industry, allowing learners to receive first-hand advice of working within the Criminal Justice System. Guest speakers include Forensic Psychologists, Prison Officers, Police, Judges, Magistrates and much more.
