Sheet metalworker, Plater or Welder.
City and Guilds Diploma in Engineering Fabrication and Welding Level 2 (Technical Certificate)
OVERVIEW
This course is suited for anyone interested in a career in fabrication & welding, the jobs it could lead to would be. Sheet metalworker, Plater, Welding.
The course is made up of six units & is a mix of practical & theory teaching students the skills they will need to do the job & the underpinning knowledge to support it.
Unit 201 Working in Engineering
Unit aim
This unit will encourage candidates to find out about working in engineering. It will cover the underpinning basic skills and knowledge needed to function in engineering or manufacturing sectors.
It will cover the need to recognise and use safe working practices, consideration of the environment and working effectively as a part of a team. It includes the methods of communication that engineers use in their everyday.
Unit 202 Principles of Engineering Technology
Unit aim
This unit is concerned with the basic principles of mathematics and science, along with the materials technology that underpin engineering applications. It covers common applied engineering calculations and materials selection in terms of types, common forms of supply, properties and methods of changing their properties.
These are core mandatory units & are assessed by online multi-choice exams generated by City & Guilds.
Unit 206 Using bench fitting Techniques
Unit aim
This unit covers a broad range of fitting activities that are required in the engineering and manufacturing sectors. It covers skills and knowledge needed to produce components for assembly
using appropriate tools, different materials and inspection techniques to achieve the required tolerances and conforming to specifications, whilst complying with health and safety legislation and regulations.
Unit 212 Principles of Fabrication & Welding
Unit aim
This unit is concerned with the technology that underpins fabrication and welding processes. The unit covers the basic principles of welding, fabrication materials, weld symbols and terminology, distortion, weld defects, heat effects of welding, forming allowances and non-destructive and workshop testing.
Unit 214 Welding by MIG process
Unit aim
This unit is to enable metal inert gas (MIG) welding skills to be developed to meet the defect acceptance requirements of BS 4872 part 1. The applied knowledge topics include health and safety hazards and methods of avoiding them, preparation, electrical requirements, consumables, welding techniques, welding positions, distortion control and rectification, BS 4872 part 1 requirements and non-destructive and workshop testing.
Unit 218 Fabricating thick plate
Unit aim
This unit is concerned with the underlying process technology associated with the fabrication of thick plate bar and rolled sections, in terms of cutting, forming, assembly and joining of thick plate bar and rolled sections fabrication.
It covers health and safety hazards associated with cutting (including oxy-fuel gas), forming, assembly and joining of thick plate bar and rolled sections fabrication.
We know that having good qualifications alone doesn’t always make you stand out.
That’s why we’re all about going the extra mile with you.
Studying with us means practical, hands-on workshops, group sessions, expert guest speakers, visits to local employers, wellbeing drop-ins, chill out time … the list goes on.
As part of the course, you will also take part in an external work placement to help you develop your confidence and skills to stand out from the crowd.
Entry requirements for this course would be a grade 4 in Maths and 3 in English
Units 206, 214 & 218 are practical units with 66% of marks being awarded for the practical assessment & 33% for the short theory test.
Unit 212 is purely theory with demonstrations of weld inspection using destructive & non-destructive tests. This unit is assessed by a written exam.
For students aged 16-18 who have not yet achieved a grade 4 in Maths or English, these subjects will be included in your timetable along with your main course. Improving your skills in Maths and English is essential, as these qualifications open doors to further study and career opportunities.
Our teaching team will work with you to help you achieve the grades you need, building confidence in these key areas to support your future success.
All 16-18 students must study maths and/or English as part of their main study programme, there is no option to study maths and/or English on its own.
