BTEC Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Creative Media Production (Game Development) – Level 4
Overview
Wondered what it takes to develop video games? Our Level 4 HNC (Higher National Certificate) in Creative Media Production (Games Development) is designed to give you the chance to explore the various disciplines of games development such as Design, Art, Programming and Animation. To help you explore these areas, you will have access to the latest gaming tech alongside a list of software used to produce AAA games. We work with the latest industry standard software including 3DS Max, Photoshop, Game Maker and Unreal engine; ensuring you will be industry ready when you finish the course.
Studying this course, you will achieve the Level 4 HNC (Higher National Certificate) in Creative Media Production (Games Development), which is the equivalent to the first year of a degree. Studying BTEC Higher Nationals is significantly cheaper than going to university but also offers the same quality of teaching and learning that you will expect to find on a HE course/programme at university.
The video games industry is one of the fastest growing creative industries in the UK, which is now estimated to be worth $178.73 Billion worldwide in 2021. With the arrival of the next generation of games hardware and ever-growing mobile gaming platforms, the games industry is bringing exciting new opportunities for those who wish to work in an innovative and creative industry. If you are a gamer looking to take the leap from player to developer our course in Games Design is an ideal way for you to begin building your game development skills and start on your own career in the industry.
A level 3 Qualification in a relevant subject or three A-Levels. It is also essential that you have achieved a grade 4 (C) in GCSE English and Maths to study this programme.
You may be considered for this course without meeting some of the above entry requirements; however, this will be subject to an interview with the course leader. Please contact us to discuss your options.

The course is based around several projects throughout the year, and while we teach you the theory to give you a thorough understanding of the Video Game industry you are assessed on your assignments and practical projects that you will undertake across the course of the year.
The course is delivered through a series of 8 units. Units that will be taught on this course are:
- Unit 1 – Individual Project
- Unit 2 – Creative Media Industry
- Unit 3 – Professional Practice
- Unit 20 – 3D Modelling
- Unit 21 – Game development Practices
- Unit 22 – Games in Context
- Unit 23 – Game Design
- Unit 31 – Art Development
Students who pass this course may progress onto the BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND) in Creative Media (Games Development), which is also delivered at South Tyneside College.
Alternatively, learners may apply and progress to University or employment.
You will also have access to our Games Design facilities reserved specially for our students studying our HNC/HND courses in Games Development. You may access these outside of scheduled lessons, giving you time to work on personal projects and assessments.
Learners will have opportunities to develop their skills through Game Jams and Showcases throughout the year. Learners will also be given the opportunity to attend events across the country at Esports events and college trips
