Award in Welding Skills
Level 2 (MIG, TIG, MMA)
OVERVIEW
These courses are intended for those who need to obtain skills in Manual Metal Arc (MMA), Metal Inert Gas/Metal Active Gas (MIG/MAG) or Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding.
The courses are flexible and are held throughout the year with time slots agreed upon enrolment. This course is also available on a Tuesday (day/evening) – as progression from Level 1.
Progression from this qualification is made via further experience and across the range of welding processes and can lead to welding industry qualifications such as ASME IX and BS 4872 EN 287.
The award is for those whose aim is to enter the industry and for those wanting to gain a welding qualification for their own personal skills development.
Upon completion of Level 2 award, students can also have their test pieces tested in accordance with British Standards 4872 which is recognised across industry.
City and Guilds Level 1 or equivalent is preferable. However, candidates must have some experience from industry and potential to be successful in gaining the qualification.
The assessment includes five mandatory practical tests and an oral test which covers the knowledge requirements for each programme of study.
The oral test will be carried out with the assessor following successful completion of the practical tests.
Practical pieces will to be assessed by visual inspection and destructive mechanical tests. Underpinning knowledge questions consist of a range of oral questions.
These qualifications are a platform for progression to other City and Guilds qualifications that have a welding route.
For example: City and Guilds Level 1 2850 Certificate in Engineering – Welding, City and Guilds Level 2 2850 Diploma in Engineering – Fabrication and Welding.
The award can also provide skills development training towards an Welding or an Engineering award that includes welding optional units. For Example: Performing Engineering Operations.
