South Shields Museum & Art Gallery to Host South Tyneside College Learners’ Exhibition: My Patch.
Inspired by local artist, John Peace and his retrospective exhibition currently on show in South Shields Museum & Art Gallery, South Tyneside College Level 2 Art and Design learners have responded to the featured landscapes, seascapes and interiors with their own depictions of places that symbolise ‘My Patch’. On Thursday March 17th, at 6pm, South Shields Museum & Art Gallery welcomes the press, South Tyneside College learners and their families, staff, and the family of John Peace to the exclusive launch of this exciting project.
A Collaboration Born Out of the Pandemic
This collaboration between the college and museum began during the covid pandemic. The Museum’s Assistant Learning Officer, Leslie Palanker-Jermyn, is a dynamic New Yorker, former gallery owner who worked with the college during lockdown, led a focused, meditative ‘slow looking’ exercise which encouraged the learners to look at artwork in detail and immerse themselves in her commentary. This inspired the learners to bring artwork to life by recreating art using props.
This exhibition has provided the learners with a real-life work experience opportunity as exhibiting artists. They have worked with gallery staff to showcase their work to a professional standard. The exclusive launch will celebrate their hard work and presents a great opportunity for the learners to meet their new Principal, Mandy Morris, and equally, an opportunity for her to see the learner’s work in a professional setting.
The show will run from March 17th to May 7th, with the official opening on Thursday, March 17th at 6pm.
Please join us to celebrate the work of our students.
