Rowers representing South Shields Marine School are in buoyant mood – after claiming victory in an annual river race.
They triumphed in the eighth Tyne Row – an eight-nautical mile challenge, from Newcastle Quayside to South Shields – crossing the finishing line a minute ahead of their nearest rival.
It was a second successive win for the marine school’s squad, who overcame five other teams to win in one-hour and 21 minutes, two minutes faster than in 2016.

There is no messing about on the river for Merchant Navy cadets who are spending 24-hours floating on the Tyne for an intrepid charity challenge.
Braving the elements – including an expected westerly wind and night chill - they will huddle in a survival raft, tethered to a jetty only by rope from midday on Monday, July 3.
Ten cadets from South Shields Marine School have volunteered for a venture which aims to raise at least £500 for good causes.
They donned survival suits – and were able to request sea sickness tablets - before they stepped into the inflatable.

A South Shields Marine School student who put his career on hold to pay for medical care for his father has finally gained his dream qualification – proving he is an officer as well as a gentleman.

Murali Balakrishnan has passed exams at our world-leading marine school - six years after using £12,000 of savings, meant for course fees and living costs, to cover hospital expenses.
