What can we help you with?

We deliver the following as part of our Employer Engagement Department:

Prepare for the Apprenticeship Levy with STC

  • From April 2017 the government is changing the way in which Apprenticeships are funded in England.

The Facts

  • All employers with a wage bill of over £3 million are required to pay a 0.5% levy tax

  • The levy is a tax of 0.5% of wage bill, paid via PAYE

  • Employers will receive a £15,000 allowance to offset against their payments

  • Your levy account will be accessed via the Digital Apprenticeship Service.Employers will use this electronic system to pay for apprenticeship training.

  • The credit in your levy account has a life span of 24 months.

Levy Paying Employer Example

Wages Bill:           50 employees x £20,000 gross salary = £5,000,000 wage bill

Levy Bill:               0.5 % levy tax x £5,000,000 wage bill = £25,000 levy bill

Offset Allowance:

£25,000 levy bill - £15,000 allowance + £10,000 annual levy payment

Non-Levy Paying Employers

Not all employers will pay the apprenticeship levy.  If you are classified as a SME with a wage bill of under £3 million then you will be effected by the apprenticeship funding reforms in a slightly different way.

Do you have 50 – 250 employees?  If so, from April 2017 you will be expected to make a 10% co-investment contribution towards the cost to train an apprentice.  The government will pay the remaining 90% co-investment amount towards training costs to support you to develop your workforce.

For example:

Business Admin Apprenticeship Level 2 - Total training cost is £2,000

Employer co-investment paid to STC = £200

Government co-investment paid to STC = £1,800

Do you have under 50 employees?  If so, you may be exempt from paying for apprenticeship training.  You may also be eligible for additional incentives to recruit and train 16-18 year olds and 19 – 24 year old apprentices who are care leavers and / or have a Local Authority Education, Health and Care Plan.

Apprenticeships - what are the benefits to employers?

Apprenticeships are vitally important to the development of future talent to ensure that you remain top of the game.  Around 250,000 apprentices are working for businesses like yours right now.

Apprentices learn while they work, so their knowledge is up-to-date and because their training is on the job, the practical skills they gain are the ones that are right for your business.

Apprentices learn through a combination of on and off-the-job education and training. On the job they work alongside your staff, and the rest they learn from our highly qualified industry experienced tutors, usually on a day release basis.

We have an apprenticeships available in a range of areas and vary between one and four years long dependent on the discipline. The training would be either full or part funded dependent on your individual needs.

Grow your own – Adult Apprenticeships

We can offer all our apprenticeships to your existing employees to enable you to upskill your current workforce in areas where it is difficult to recruit. We are currently delivering a range of apprenticeships for current semi-skilled operators at businesses across the region. The trainees are aged 24 – 55 and are being trained onsite by experienced industry specialists.

These programmes can be full or part funded dependent on your specific requirements and at the end of the programme the trainees will receive a recognised qualification along with an apprenticeship certificate.


A traineeship is an education and training programme with work experience that runs over a period of up to 6 months with no cost to the employer.

Trainees are given a programme based on the specific requirements of your business and sector; allowing them to acquire the essential skills and knowledge vital for your profession. During the programme trainees will then spend up to 6 weeks at your business, putting the skills they have learnt to practice.

After the 6 month programme, you have no obligations towards the trainee. However, a lot of companies decide to offer trainees an apprenticeship within their business if they have displayed the relevant skills and knowledge right for them.

The flexibility of traineeships offers employers the opportunity to help build a pool of high quality future recruits for your sector without any incurred costs to the employer.
