South Tyneside Homes are working in partnership with South Tyneside College to offer a pre-apprenticeship training and work placement programme to 8 young people between the ages of 16 and 19 who have not yet found employment or entered a school, college or training programme.

The work placements are within South Tyneside Homes and the aim is to give participants practical support and work experience, to gain skills and knowledge that might lead on to an apprenticeship, further training or other employment.

As part of this programme, South Tyneside Homes are offering a guaranteed apprentice-level interview to anyone who successfully completes the traineeship and college placement, and can show that they meet the entry standards required of an apprenticeship. All participants will be paid minimum wage for their age category.

The traineeship will involve two types of work placement:

Environmental

This will involve working directly with members of the handy estates and environmental maintenance team at South Tyneside Homes. The placement will involve gaining experience in:

  • Keeping local areas clean, safe and tidy

  • Removing litter and weeds, sweeping, gritting, cleansing and recycling

  • Helping to remove fly-tipping, waste and graffiti

  • Working as a team member

  • Health and safety at work

  • Customer service

  • Organising and carrying out work to a high quality.

Property maintenance

This will involve working directly with members of a property maintenance team at South Tyneside Homes. The placement will involve gaining experience in:

  • Tidying and cleaning gardens and other areas

  • Painting and decorating

  • Minor repairs to properties and estates e.g. (e.g. patch plastering, tiling, joinery/ fencing, minor brickwork and plumbing repairs.)

  • Working as a team member

  • Health and Safety at work

  • Customer Service

  • Organising and carrying out work to a high quality.

College Programme

Participants will attend college for one day per week. This learning will include:

  • Maths and English functional skills

  • Skills and knowledge that will support the trainees in the workplace, including health and safety, environment, recycling, painting and decorating, basic maintenance and construction skills.

Workplace Mentoring and Expenses

Participants will be supported by workplace mentors and supervisors. They will have the chance to work alongside experienced professionals, other trainees and current apprentices.

Participants will be employed by South Tyneside Homes on a fixed term basis.
