First year South Tyneside College sports student Jake Phelan has a flipside that sets him apart.

For he is a top acrobatic gymnast – and is getting set to compete for Team GB in his discipline’s most prestigious international event of the year.

In July, Jake, 16, of Bridlington Parade, Hebburn, will swap the classroom for the sports arena at the World Games 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland.


Young musicians from South Tyneside College are to play at pop music’s most iconic venue during a short – but maybe, magical – tour to the home of The Beatles.

And their performance at Liverpool’s legendary Cavern Club, on Wednesday, May 3, and Thursday, May 4, will see a return, in part, to the sounds of the Sixties and Seventies. They plan to play several definitive Beatles tracks, including Drive My Car, and other tunes written by Sir Paul McCartney.These will include Band on the Run, the title track of the highly-rated 1973 album by his post-Beatles band, Wings.
