A South Tyneside College apprentice who specialises in promoting football to females has been given a fresh sporting chance to progress her career.

Alex Fontaine, 18, has won a second year of funding from a national FA-backed programme to get more girls playing soccer.

She is one of only four Women and Girls Football Apprentices in the country to gain the £7,000 support two years running.


South Tyneside College is to play a key role in a new partnership to boost the skills of hundreds of employees at the UK’s largest mental health trust.

It has been selected by Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust to provide part of a package of support to upskill some of the trust’s 6,000 staff.

Halls of residence at South Tyneside College – used mainly by young mariners studying at world-famous South Shields Marine School – have been judged ‘outstanding’ for the second successive time by education inspectorate Ofsted.

Ofsted found the support residential students receive to be so effective that they achieve more than their non-residential peers, benefiting from progress that was ‘significant and sustained’.


A nationally recognised make up artist has returned to her South Tyneside College roots to highlight her skills and inspire a new generation to follow in her footsteps and reach for the stars.

London-based Tamzin Cummings, 27, lead make up artist for the world-famous Charlotte Tilbury brand, delivered a masterclass for around 25 level 2, 3 and 4 beauty students.


Representatives from the UK’s major shipping companies will be at South Shields Marine School on Saturday, April 28, seeking to find the next generation of Merchant Navy cadets.

They will add their expertise to an information-packed Shipping Day at the Marine School, which is one of the world’s leading maritime training centres and based at South Tyneside College.


Students at South Tyneside College have stepped out to show support for a children’s charity based a short stroll from the classroom - and close to their hearts.

The learners, who study within our Interface department for young people on the autism spectrum, made a round trip of around two miles in a fundraising mission for the Charlie Cookson Foundation.
