A charitable fund which operates through South Tyneside College is celebrating a fundraising drive which is helping female musicians in Zimbabwe to play the drums.

Inspired by the Dr Winterbottom Charitable Fund’s aims, customers at the Black Horse pub, in West Boldon, South Tyneside, donated to an initiative to buy a kit to encourage girls in the African state to play.

A former South Shields Marine School student and his crew have been recognised by the International Maritime Organisation for their bravery in the rescue of mixed migrants at sea.

Captain Michael Christopher Bower and the crew of the M/V OOC Jaguar OOC Opielok Offshore Carriers GmbH & Co. KG were commended for their display of bravery, professionalism and compassion, upholding the highest traditions of the sea.

In one year the Captain and crew rescued a total of 1,006 people at sea, off Libya, while working aboard a Platform Supply Vessel, with only 14 crew in total.

Criminology students at South Tyneside College have proved they are clued up on how to help the homeless this Christmas – by launching a support appeal.

They are asking the public to donate food and non-perishable items for Christian faith-based charity Hospitality and Hope.

Fake moustaches but genuine concern came together when staff and students at South Tyneside College showed support for the Movember health campaign.

Dozens donned pretend facial hair to back the annual month-long international initiative, which raises awareness of men’s health issues.

While wearing their moustaches they held a cake sale and a raffle in the reception of the college’s Westoe campus in South Shields.
