Female drummers in Zimbabwe are to get into the groove by benefitting from a fundraising drive, organised by the Dr Winterbottom Charitable Fund, which operates through South Tyneside College.

The fund asked regulars at the Black Horse pub in West Boldon, South Tyneside, to help buy a drum kit by donating towards a £370 target.

Students on a new and unique education programme, operated by South Tyneside College and Ofsted ‘outstanding’ school St Wilfrid’s RC College, are celebrating success in its first ever results.

All 12 learners who started Career College North East (CCNE) as 14-year-olds at its launch in 2015, have passed its innovative joint vocational and academic course.

Each will now either progress into an apprenticeship, an engineering maritime pre-cadetship, or continue in Further Education.

We are working with the world-leading motor manufacturer on courses, starting in September 2017, which aim to raise the skill levels of 17 and 18-year-olds from across the North East.
To inspire success, Nissan will guarantee an interview to all students who complete and pass their learning programme.

Ambitious youngsters seeking new skills will gain high-quality classroom instruction and invaluable on-the-job work experience from the traineeship programme.


The traineeship, which starts on Monday, September 4, features construction services skills, including painting, plaster repairs and tiling.

There is no messing about on the river for Merchant Navy cadets who are spending 24-hours floating on the Tyne for an intrepid charity challenge.
Braving the elements – including an expected westerly wind and night chill - they will huddle in a survival raft, tethered to a jetty only by rope from midday on Monday, July 3.
Ten cadets from South Shields Marine School have volunteered for a venture which aims to raise at least £500 for good causes.
They donned survival suits – and were able to request sea sickness tablets - before they stepped into the inflatable.

Rowers representing South Shields Marine School are in buoyant mood – after claiming victory in an annual river race.
They triumphed in the eighth Tyne Row – an eight-nautical mile challenge, from Newcastle Quayside to South Shields – crossing the finishing line a minute ahead of their nearest rival.
It was a second successive win for the marine school’s squad, who overcame five other teams to win in one-hour and 21 minutes, two minutes faster than in 2016.
