A South Shields Marine School student who put his career on hold to pay for medical care for his father has finally gained his dream qualification – proving he is an officer as well as a gentleman.

Murali Balakrishnan has passed exams at our world-leading marine school - six years after using £12,000 of savings, meant for course fees and living costs, to cover hospital expenses.

South Tyneside College has been given £60,000 funding from Sport England to reduce the number of their students who are completing less than thirty minutes of activity each week. South Tyneside College would like to thank the National lottery for this funding which will help raise the activity levels of its students and staff.

Female drummers in Zimbabwe are to get into the groove by benefitting from a fundraising drive, organised by the Dr Winterbottom Charitable Fund, which operates through South Tyneside College.

The fund asked regulars at the Black Horse pub in West Boldon, South Tyneside, to help buy a drum kit by donating towards a £370 target.
