Provides underpinning nautical knowledge and prepares candidates for the formal examination in order to qualify for entry to the VTS Induction/Underpinning Knowledge Course.

Course content:

  • Chartwork and tides
  • Collision regulations
  • Aids to navigation
  • Shipborne navigational aids including radar & ARPA
  • Shipboard knowledge
  • Port operations A detailed syllabus can be found by consulting Module 4 of IALA V-103/1.

Entry Requirements top

Persons without acceptable marine qualifications who do not qualify for accredited prior learning in Module 4 (Nautical Knowledge). English language to UK academic standard or IELTS level 5 for students whos first language is not English. Qualifications achieved: Vocational study not leading to a recognised qualification, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies (SSA 4).
