The Ice Navigation course is principally intended for officers in charge of a navigational watch and Masters involved in navigating in ice conditions. A trainee successfully completing this course will be able to use the knowledge and experience gained to overcome the problems brought about by navigating in ice covered seas.

Course content:

  • SOLAS requirements
  • IMO, STCW, MARPOL & Polar Code
  • Formation of ice including types of ice
  • Signs of ice and ice detection
  • Ice charts
  • Ice classes
  • Stability criteria for ice class vessels
  • Requirements for ships operating in ice & winterisation of vessels
  • Navigating in ice
  • Icebreakers and assistance
  • Safe working practice during ice navigation
  • Effect on personnel of working in cold conditions
